Darlene Newsom

Chief Executive Officer

Leaders nationwide recognize Darlene Newsom as an expert on the issue of families experiencing homelessness, as well the topic of homelessness in general. Around her office on UMOM New Day Centers main campus, she’s known for her laser focus on making a difference. Often, Darlene is heard saying, “We don’t manage homelessness, we end it.” Or, when she and her staff are faced with a particularly daunting task: “We don’t do easy.”

Having worked in Arizona’s nonprofit sector for nearly 50 years, it’s rare to find a fellow leader who is not acquainted with Darlene. She spent time as the Director of a shelter for homeless youth in Tucson, and founded a shelter for homeless families in Yuma. In 2002, Darlene took the helm at UMOM New Day Centers, overseeing its current staff of 300 and annual budget of $20 million. Under her leadership, UMOM has seen exponential expansion in its capacity to serve Maricopa County, particularly in the areas of affordable housing, rapid rehousing and permanent supportive housing.

Darlene was honored with the Public Sector Athena Award in 2011, and is a Fellow of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. Darlene holds a Master’s in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona.

What do you love about working for UMOM?
I love that we receive such great support from the faith, corporate, and government groups, and individuals. It will continue to take all these kinds of support – in donations, grants, and volunteer time – for us to finally end homelessness. I believe UMOM is at the cutting edge, providing services grounded in evidence-based practices that are truly making a difference in the lives of the people we serve.

Daniel Gottry

Chief Administrative Officer

Daniel Gottry found his nonprofit home when he joined UMOM New Day Centers in 1992. He brings a varied and valuable background that includes publishing with a major national imprint as well as extensive marketing, financial, development and advertising experience gained during his time with two agencies serving the nonprofit world.

To show how much times have changed: when Dan first arrived at UMOM, he was the sole member of the development staff. He established the first direct mail program, along with an effective method for securing grant funding. These days, Dan oversees UMOM’s finances, human resources functions, information technology and is integrally involved in the development of UMOM’s affordable housing projects.

Dan studied business and education at the University of Minnesota.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever witnessed at UMOM?
Early in my time at UMOM, I visited our childcare center. As I walked in, I saw two sleeping babies, and two more who were being comforted by staff. Across the room was another child, standing in her crib, screaming at the top of her lungs. She was new, and it was clear she was filled with fear and uncertainty. I walked toward her, spoke in a low voice and placed my hands over her tiny, white knuckles grasping the crib rail. She looked up, placed her head in my hands and was totally at peace and quiet. In that moment, I realized it’s exactly what UMOM was doing for her mother: showing her she was not alone and that we care for her.

It’s how we approach everything: giving hope to those who have none.

Mattie Lord

Chief Program Officer

Mattie Lord has encyclopedic knowledge of issues related to homelessness along with the best practices to prevent and end it.

Since 2010, Mattie had served as UMOM’s Chief Program officer, overseeing hundreds of employees, programs and support services at all UMOM campuses. During that time, she’s been the force behind a critical shift in emphasis from outputs to outcomes. Mattie has raised millions, been a key partner in national research, and coordinated large-scale inter-agency cooperation. She is an advocate for those experiencing homelessness in a wide range of policy environments.

Mattie’s background includes equally impactful time as Arizona’s State Homeless Coordination (Department of Economic Security) and State Coordinator for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth. She began her career as a classroom teacher.

Mattie holds an M.A. in Education, Curriculum and Instruction from Chapman University and a B.A. from the University of Arizona. She is a Fellow of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, a Flinn-Brown Fellow and holds leadership positions in several regional organizations focused on the issues of homelessness.

What draws you to this kind of work?
I began my career teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in high poverty areas. One day, my class and I sat in a circle and I asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. They didn’t list the expected job titles (police, fireman, doctor, lawyer). Instead, they replied with “I want to collect disability” or “I hope to work at Circle K.” In that moment, I realized it was my job to help them see a future different than their current status. I needed to believe in them, invest in them, and help them forge their own paths.

I learned far more from my students than they ever learned from me. Their answers forever changed my perspective and, to this day, I continue the work they inspired.

Steven Stivers

Chief Operating Officer

When it comes to nonprofit and for-profit organizations, Steven Stivers knows what makes them tick and how to adjust to make them extraordinary.

As Chief Operation Officer for UMOM New Day Centers, Steven oversees facilities and property management, data and evaluation, and UMOM’s social enterprise businesses and overall business strategies. His specialty is designing system-level changes that improve efficiency, effectiveness and consistency of operations.

Before joining UMOM in 2016, Steven spent eight years in senior management positions. He was Executive Director for the Homeless ID Project located at the Human Services Campus in Phoenix, Director of Operations for a non-profit focused on Workforce Development and Manager for a multi-million-dollar restaurant.

Steven graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Studies from Arizona State University.

What draws you to this kind of work?
For me, the draw is working alongside smart, passionate, and dedicated change-makers who are leveraging their talents for social good. I believe work should be purposeful and guided by your passions. I have always been passionate about combating extreme poverty in the world, and while that is a big audacious goal – I am driven by the large-scale nature of the challenge.

Melissa G. Steimer, MPA, CFRE

Chief Development Officer

College ignited the fundraising spark for Melissa more than 20 years ago, during her undergrad time at Creighton University. She started fundraising with alumni and never looked back.

Since her university days, Melissa has crisscrossed the U.S., raising funds for local and national animal welfare organizations, hospitals and senior living communities, as well as performing arts and museum groups. As UMOM’s Chief Development Officer since 2016, Melissa builds the financial foundation that, in turn, helps families, youth, women and veterans rebuild their lives.

In addition to her B.A. in Political Science/International Relations from Creighton University, Melissa also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska and is a Certified Fundraising Executive.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever witnessed at UMOM?
I work in a building where, almost every day, I see families packing up and leaving to their new, permanent home. A teenage boy and his mom stick in my mind – I got to know both, as well as this young man’s dreams for his future. Those dreams included playing in the NBA or, if that didn’t work, to open his own business. Over the course of almost a year, I saw their joy grow as they got closer to a home of their own. When they moved out, the mom was so happy and gave me a great big hug! Her story reminds me that although our work is hard, our clients understand that our support will give them hope and get them home.
